YOGA IN ISLANDIA
Ancient Remedy for Modern Stress
JULY/AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2007
Greetings Dear Yoginis!
Summer is here and the movie SICKO has opened, which is a good vehicle to remind us to take care of ourselves! What better way to do that than by practicing YOGA!? But first a bit of news – I was the Yoga Teacher for the National NOW Conference in Detroit – July 12, 13, 14, 15 - my fourth year!
My Letter to the Editor of the YOGA JOURNAL – June 2007 issue – was published! “He Said, She Said” –
“Thank you for reviewing Nischala Joy Devi’s book in ‘A Feminine Critique’ (March ’07). I have been a feminist for as long as I have been studying yoga. My consciousness is continually alerted when teachers use the male pronoun in their writings, so I change ‘he’ to ‘she’. In doing so, I hope to raise a feminist consciousness in my own students.

Do you recognize yourself in any of these statistics?
Of American Women – ages 45-54:
- 33% suffer from hypertension
- 32% have lower back pain
- 20% have elevated blood pressure
- 22% have knee pain
- 21% have neck pain
- 12% have shoulder pain
- 11% have finger pain
Of American Men – ages 45-54:
- 30% suffer from hypertension
- 27% have lower back pain
- 20% have elevated blood pressure
- 19% have knee pain
- 15% have neck pain
- 13% have shoulder pain
- 7% have finger pain
If you have elevated blood pressure, I urge you to practice Pranayama daily – for a minimum of at least 5 rounds twice a day – gradually increasing to 10 rounds over a month period. If you have a blood pressure machine at home, you can keep track of your progress, or go to the local drug store, and check with your doctor – he or she may not know the benefits of the practice, but you can add to their knowledge!
SUFFERING FROM POST-NASAL DRIP? ALLERGIES? SINUS PROBLEMS?
The Neti Pots have arrived! Give me a call and let me know when you want to get yours. Any college student should pack their Neti Pot in their luggage so when change of season problems arise, they will have their trusty Neti. Anyone wanting a personal demonstration, call me at 631-348-7199 or email me grac...@gracewelch.com to arrange a time.
SWEAT LODGE – Want to Experience this Native-American Cleansing Practice?
One of my Yoga students in the Hamptons facilitates Sweat Lodge. If you don’t suffer from Claustrophobia, and you can stand the heat, some afficianados of this practice not only sweat out their toxins, but have spiritual awakenings. If interested, give me a call to put your name on the reservation list.
